You need to make sure your drag is set correctly or you will stress your line as it enters the level wind oval guide at an angle and then changes angle again going out to the first guide. Not a big deal until you have a big fish screaming line in a power run. If the last position was on the left side of the spool the line increases angle as the it comes off and advances to the right. The one drawback (-) is the level wind line guide stays in the last position it was in once you engage the clutch. The adjustable magforce cast control works! No need to worry about thumbing your line on the retrieve, the level wind does that for you. The reel casts like magic and you don’t have to worry about bird nests. The carbon drag system is super sweet and with 25lbs of drag has all the huevos to stop a 40 + lb fish. Here’s a couple double plus’s (++) on the reel. If only the Albacore would have shown up. The set up performed flawlessly on tuna to 30lbs. The features that have made the Lexa a staple in markets across the country have been supplemented and upgraded to offer the.

The battle tested Lexa line has been upgraded and reintroduced- the all new Lexa Type HD. I broke my promise and fished the 400HS-P with the Seeker 808 all summer and into October. The Lexa HD you have come to know and love- upgraded. If you had a chance to fish SoCal in 2014 you know the small yellow fin moved into the area in mid July. I went back to the 8’ Seeker and promised myself, no matter how tempting, no tuna on this set up. I married the 400HS-P (power handle) reel with several rods I already had, but they just didn’t do the job. I ordered a LEXA 400HS-P 7.1:1 w/ (Power Handle) for the 2014 season. The reel had plenty of drag, but the limiting factor was the rod and the paddle handle. Love my lexa, I have my 400 on a Phoenix black diamond 8 ft but that’s a little more out of your range.

Long story short, I finally got the fish but it took another 20 minutes for a 40lb YFT. Pick up an okuma rod like previously mentioned or pick up a Phoenix m1 inshore 801, I think they are about 199 plus tax but great bang for the buck, super light and tough. The battle had really just begun and I was out gunned with the fish on the up and down. The battle began and after 25 minutes I had the fish at deep color. Maybe this was a mistake my luck the school size gained twenty pounds. I engaged the clutch and the line came tight and then screamed.

The free spool was smooth and the bait swam out another 15 yards and got picked up. Daiwa Proteus Boat Tuna Special Conventional Rod. The first thing I noticed was how easy it was to pitch the bait out 10 yds with no problem. Built to handle just about anything, the Daiwa Lexa WN 300 & 400 Casting Reels utilize Daiwas Ultimate. I set the drag for 10-11lbs and made a soft underhand with a shoulder hooked sardine. I thought “Let’s see what this new reel with 25lbs of drag will do on a 30lb tuna”. I had the LEXA loaded with 55lb Daiwa Samurai braid and a 3’ piece of 30lb floro carbon. On a stop out and just up from Cedros, school size yellow fin made a showing. My plan was to use the set up while fishing in and around Cedros for fat calico bass. I married the new Daiwa reel with a Seeker Blue Lighting Inshore 808 8’T 15(20)25.
